Non-penalty goals are all goals minus successful in-match penalties. That includes direct free kicks, headers and other eligible finishes. It is broader than open-play goals. We subtract scored penalties, never the number attempted, and never subtract shootout kicks that were absent from the starting totals.
Per appearance divides non-penalty goals by UEFA’s 163 Messi appearances or 183 Ronaldo appearances. Per 90 divides by UEFA’s published 13,585 or 15,937 minutes, then multiplies by 90. These denominators include non-scoring matches and refer to the same completed Champions League scope.
Minute conventions and historical provider credits can differ. These are UEFA’s published aggregate minutes, including extra time, separate from our appearance archive; they do not overwrite its rows or minute totals. The equations use unrounded inputs, and displayed rates are rounded to three decimals. Our archive records 13,577 Messi minutes and 15,944 Ronaldo minutes in these same 163/183 appearances, compared with UEFA’s 13,585/15,937. These differences remain source-dependent and unresolved; this page labels its UEFA denominators explicitly.
