Methodology

Anyone can publish a goal tally. What separates a reference from a scraper is being able to say precisely what was counted, what was excluded, and why. This page is that account. If you find something here that does not hold up, tell us — corrections are made and noted.

What the database contains

The two are separate sources with different scopes, which is why a career goal total taken from the goal ledger (900 for Messi, 965 for Ronaldo) does not equal the sum of the season ledger. We do not silently blend them. Each page states which ledger it is drawing on, and we never add a figure from one to a figure from the other.

Reconciling names across sources

The two players' records were compiled from different sources, which label the same entities differently. One writes “Champions League”, the other “UEFA Champions League”. One writes “Sevilla”, the other “Sevilla FC”. Left alone, every head-to-head comparison would split across two half-empty pages and understate both men.

So we canonicalise. Accents are folded, club-type tokens (FC, CF, UD, RCD and so on) are stripped for matching purposes only, and a curated map resolves the remainder. The clearest spelling in each group becomes the display name.

The original values are never overwritten — canonical names are stored alongside them, so any reconciliation can be audited or reversed.

What we deliberately do not publish

This is the part most sites leave out, and it is the part that should earn your trust or lose it.

Our source for Messi's goals carries two fields that do not survive scrutiny:

• Finish type. 97.9% of his recorded goals are tagged “Left-footed shot”, and only a handful are recorded as penalties against a real career figure well above a hundred. That is a default value, not a record.
• Minute. Five values account for roughly seven in ten of his goals, across far fewer distinct minutes than a real distribution produces.

Ronaldo's equivalent fields look genuine on both tests. We could therefore have published his breakdowns and quietly omitted Messi's — which would have produced a comparison that was accurate in each half and grossly misleading as a whole. Instead both are withheld everywhere on the site, and any finish-type breakdown is suppressed automatically unless both players' data passes a concentration check.

The consequence is that we publish fewer statistics than some competitors. We think a smaller set of numbers you can rely on beats a larger set you cannot.

Why our totals differ from other sites

They will, and anyone claiming a single canonical number is overselling. Reputable sources disagree on:

• whether friendlies and youth-team fixtures count
• how to treat annulled, abandoned or replayed matches
• whether qualifying rounds belong to a competition's total
• where the data cut-off falls, for two players who are still active

Rather than assert one answer, we show every individual goal behind every total, so you can see exactly what is included and reach your own view.

Updates and corrections

Both careers are still producing records, so the ledgers are updated as matches are played. Figures on this site are generated from the database at the moment each page loads — nothing is hard-coded into the text, so a page cannot fall out of step with the data behind it.

If you find an error, send it to us with a source. We would rather be corrected than be confidently wrong, and material corrections are acknowledged rather than quietly patched.

Independence

This site is published independently in the United Kingdom by Daniel Russel. It has no affiliation with either player, their clubs, FIFA, UEFA or any governing body, and nobody pays for a verdict. It carries advertising, which funds the hosting and nothing else; advertisers have no input into the data or the analysis. Our position on who is the better player is that you should decide with your own weightings.
