Ronaldo leads 12–5 in direct free-kick goals. Messi’s five came for Barcelona; UEFA accounts of all nine of his Paris goals add zero direct free kicks. Complete attempt totals are unavailable here, so a conversion comparison cannot be calculated.

A direct free-kick goal is scored straight from the taker’s free kick. A header from a free-kick delivery or a rebound after the keeper saves it is not a direct free kick. Non-penalty goals include direct free kicks; the categories should not be added together.
FC Barcelona’s May 2021 competition breakdown credits Messi with five Champions League free kicks. His Barcelona European campaign had already ended. UEFA’s later career summary credits him with 120 Barcelona goals and nine for Paris. The six source-linked Paris match checks below account for all nine and identify no direct free kicks, completing that bridge to his competition-career figure.
UEFA explicitly reports Ronaldo’s twelve direct free kicks in its July 2026 career review. Neither reviewed source provides complete comparable attempt totals for both players. More goals therefore does not establish a better conversion rate, and unavailable attempts are never displayed as zero.

UEFA says Kane could equal Ronaldo’s 11-game Champions League scoring run when Bayern visit Atlético on Tuesday.
Our take: Our Champions League appearance archive puts Ronaldo’s longest scoring run at 11 games and Messi’s at five, counting consecutive appearances rather than fixtures a player missed.
