Messi earns MLS Team of the Matchday recognition

Inter Miami confirms Messi’s selection for Matchday 34 after his goal and assist against New England.

Our take: Our 2026 MLS archive records 26 goals and 13 final-touch assists for Messi; that assist definition excludes the secondary credits MLS can award. Read the league’s recognition alongside the match archive, rather than treating all assist totals as interchangeable. Lionel Messi has been selected for MLS Team of the Matchday 34 after Inter Miami’s comeback win at New England. The club announced the recognition on 2 November, calling it his thirteenth selection of the regular season.

The club highlighted both parts of his contribution in the 1–2 away win: a headed assist for Germán Berterame’s equaliser and the winning goal late in the second half. The match itself took place on Sunday, 1 November; this selection is a later announcement.

Inter Miami’s report lists 26 goals in 30 regular-season appearances and 16 assists under the league’s counting convention. Our separate archive uses a final-touch assist definition, so its assist figure is presented with that scope below.

Team of the Matchday recognises a selected line-up for the round. It is kept separate from senior team trophies in our honours coverage.

LIONEL MESSI

Messi absent from Argentina’s November squad

AFA’s official squad omits Messi after his international farewell; Argentina prepare for November friendlies.

Our take: Our ledger has Messi on 126 Argentina goals and Ronaldo on 146 for Portugal: a gap of 20, compared with 48 across their whole careers. Club goals can move the Race to 1,000, but they do not alter the international comparison. Messi’s Argentina goals → Ronaldo’s Portugal goals →Analysis uses records reviewed .

CRISTIANO RONALDO

Ronaldo keeps streak record as Kane’s run ends

UEFA confirms Kane did not score in Bayern’s win at Atlético, ending his run short of Ronaldo’s record.

Our take: Counting appearances in our archive, Ronaldo’s longest Champions League scoring run is 11 matches, compared with Messi’s 5. This counts successive appearances, so it should not be confused with goals in successive team fixtures or a single-season scoring record.
