Sky News and SPORT TV report Ronaldo’s Portugal retirement; their accounts differ on whether November appearances remain possible.
Our take: In our ledger, Ronaldo’s 146 Portugal goals are 20 above Messi’s 126 Argentina goals. If he plays only club football from here, the 15 he still needs for 1,000 must come in eligible club matches. Ronaldo’s Portugal goals →Follow the Race to 1,000 →Analysis uses records reviewed .

Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from Portugal duty, according to Sky News and Portuguese broadcaster SPORT TV. Both published reports on 5 November. The announcement concerns international football, rather than his club career.
The timing needs care. Sky News places the handover of Portugal’s shirt after the November international break. SPORT TV’s later profile says he will not wear it again. Those accounts differ; we have not independently established whether any November appearance remains possible.
Sky also reports that the Portuguese Football Federation plans a future tribute. That does not, by itself, confirm a farewell match or a team-sheet place. We have not treated the announcement as evidence of another appearance or goal.
We directly read the named reports and the short caption on Ronaldo’s X post, but did not independently watch the attached video. The account of his decision therefore remains attributed to the publishers, and the timing difference is disclosed rather than resolved by assumption.

UEFA confirms Kane did not score in Bayern’s win at Atlético, ending his run short of Ronaldo’s record.
Our take: Counting appearances in our archive, Ronaldo’s longest Champions League scoring run is 11 matches, compared with Messi’s 5. This counts successive appearances, so it should not be confused with goals in successive team fixtures or a single-season scoring record. Messi overtaken by Neuer in Champions League appearances
UEFA lists Neuer on 164 main-competition appearances, ahead of Messi’s 163; Ronaldo remains top on 183.
Our take: In our matching main-competition archive, Messi averages 0.79 goals per appearance and Ronaldo 0.77. That scoring comparison uses the same eligible matches for each player’s goals and appearances, and answers a different question from the appearance ranking.
