Manuel Neuer has moved above Lionel Messi in UEFA’s all-time Champions League appearance list. The governing body’s updated table, dated 3 November, puts the Bayern Munich goalkeeper on 164 matches, with Messi and Thomas Müller on 163.
Ronaldo remains the record holder on 183, ahead of Iker Casillas on 177. Neuer is now third, while Messi and Müller share the next total; this is an appearances ranking, not a goal table.
The Bundesliga’s official report links Neuer’s milestone to Bayern’s trip to Atlético Madrid on 3 November. UEFA’s stated scope runs from the group or league phase to the final, excluding qualifying.
Our historical comparison uses matching main-competition appearance records. It retains the archive’s source definitions and separate qualifying entries, rather than adding Neuer’s match to Messi or Ronaldo’s personal appearance count.

UEFA confirms Kane did not score in Bayern’s win at Atlético, ending his run short of Ronaldo’s record.
Our take: Counting appearances in our archive, Ronaldo’s longest Champions League scoring run is 11 matches, compared with Messi’s 5. This counts successive appearances, so it should not be confused with goals in successive team fixtures or a single-season scoring record.
