FIFPRO lists both forwards among its finalists; the men’s team will be revealed on 9 November.
Our take: Across FIFPRO’s stated performance window, our senior-goal ledger records 45 for Messi and 38 for Ronaldo. That dated comparison is more relevant here than today’s career totals, although goals alone do not decide a player-voted team. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are both on FIFPRO’s shortlist for the 2026 Men’s World 11. The players’ union names the Inter Miami and Al Nassr forwards in its official announcement dated 2 November, ahead of the final team being revealed on 9 November.
They are among eight forward finalists in a field of 26 players across all positions. The other attacking candidates include Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland and Lamine Yamal; appearing on the shortlist does not establish who has won a place.
The award is decided by professional footballers, rather than an open fan ballot. FIFPRO defines the men’s performance period as 4 August 2025 to 19 July 2026 inclusive, with a minimum of 30 official appearances for eligibility.
That defined period is useful context for comparing the two careers. Neither a nomination nor inclusion in the eventual team is a Super Ballon d’Or or an additional annual Ballon d’Or win. The final selection remains pending.

UEFA says Kane could equal Ronaldo’s 11-game Champions League scoring run when Bayern visit Atlético on Tuesday.
Our take: Our Champions League appearance archive puts Ronaldo’s longest scoring run at 11 games and Messi’s at five, counting consecutive appearances rather than fixtures a player missed. That makes Kane’s chase a consistency comparison alongside the separate career-goals leaderboard. Inspect Champions League appearances →Champions League goal totals →Analysis uses records reviewed .
The AFC confirms Al Nassr’s 6–2 win at Pakhtakor, with João Félix scoring twice and Ronaldo absent from the named scorers.
Our take: Our AFC Champions League Elite tracker still credits Ronaldo with one goal; his older AFC Champions League and Champions League Two records are separate. His Race to 1,000 total remains 985, with 15 still needed. AFC Champions League Elite goals →Race to 1,000 →Analysis uses records reviewed .
Inter Miami confirms Messi’s selection for Matchday 34 after his goal and assist against New England.
Our take: Our 2026 MLS archive records 26 goals and 13 final-touch assists for Messi; that assist definition excludes the secondary credits MLS can award.
