Opinion: imagine Messi and Ronaldo each receiving a Super Ballon d’Or. Two trophies, two careers and one stage. It would be a celebration of an era, rather than another evening spent asking which footballer must lose for the other to be appreciated.
This is our proposal, not an announcement. We found no confirmation of a new edition or a joint ceremony in the official organiser material checked on 3 November 2026. No date, nominees or result should be inferred from the idea.
Why two honours would mean something
Messi and Ronaldo do not need identical careers to deserve recognition together. Messi’s close control and passing invite one kind of admiration; Ronaldo’s movement, finishing and reinvention invite another. Those are editorial judgements about how we watch them, not a formula that declares either style objectively superior.
Their annual award records also stand on their own: eight Ballons d’Or for Messi and five for Ronaldo. Inter Miami documents Messi’s eighth in 2023, while Real Madrid lists Ronaldo’s five winning years. Recognising both careers would not erase those differences, rewrite any vote or add another annual Ballon d’Or to either record.
A moment bigger than another argument
Imagine the presentation: each player honoured individually, with room to explain what made his career remarkable. Then a photograph together. For supporters who have spent years defending one against the other, that image could offer something the usual leaderboard cannot: permission to enjoy both without surrendering a favourite.
It need not pretend they were the same player, had the same strengths or won the same competitions. The point would be to give two distinct stories their own ending. That is why separate career honours, presented together, feel more meaningful to us than cutting a single prize in half.
Respect the history, keep the question open
There is a real historical award behind the debate. Real Madrid’s retrospective records Alfredo Di Stéfano receiving the Super Ballon d’Or on 24 December 1989 and describes him as its only recipient. Any future organiser would have to explain the purpose and rules of a new honour; fans cannot announce that on its behalf.
Our fan poll now offers Messi, Ronaldo or Both deserve it. The third choice means each deserves a career honour. It has a separate count and does not add votes to either player. Existing votes stay in place, and remembered browsers can change their choice. Which outcome would you want to see?
