A new Stats Perform preview uses a different assist total from Miami’s official notice and our archive. We explain the limits.
Our take: Our 2026 MLS archive records 26 Messi goals and 13 final-touch assists, or 39 contributions under its definition. Those figures need their stated scope before being used in an MVP comparison, because provider assist counts are not interchangeable. A Stats Perform preview published by SoccerNews on 6 November revisits Kily González’s support for Lionel Messi’s MVP case. The endorsement was already reported after the New England match; it is not a new award decision. Today’s comparison is about how the accompanying statistics are counted.
The preview lists Messi with 15 MLS assists. Inter Miami’s official Team of the Matchday notice, published on 2 November, lists 16. Our archive uses its own source-defined final-touch credits and records 13 through the completed match on 1 November.
All three presentations agree on 26 league goals. We have not established the reason for every assist-credit difference, so the totals remain separately labelled. This report does not justify rewriting a historical assist or blending the figures into one leaderboard.
González’s support is an opinion, not confirmation of an MVP win. Readers can inspect the MLS-only archive and our coverage notes before comparing scoring contributions; a league-season sample also has a different scope from either player’s full career.

GOAL sees Messi peaking before the play-offs. Our latest five-game samples add context, with different cutoffs for each player.

AFA’s official squad omits Messi after his international farewell; Argentina prepare for November friendlies.
Our take: Our ledger has Messi on 126 Argentina goals and Ronaldo on 146 for Portugal: a gap of 20, compared with 48 across their whole careers. Club goals can move the Race to 1,000, but they do not alter the international comparison. Messi’s Argentina goals →Ronaldo’s Portugal goals →Analysis uses records reviewed .

UEFA now records Ronaldo’s Portugal retirement; Reuters says a possible farewell on the pitch remains unclear.
Our take: In our ledger, Ronaldo’s 146 Portugal goals are 20 above Messi’s 126 Argentina goals. If he plays only club football from here, the 15 he still needs for 1,000 must come in eligible club matches. Ronaldo’s Portugal goals →Follow the Race to 1,000 →Analysis uses records reviewed .
