Cristiano Ronaldo has scored more career goals than Lionel Messi. In our database it is 965 to 900, and that single number does more work in this argument than any other. It is the first thing quoted, the last word in most exchanges, and it is completely true.
It is also, on its own, close to meaningless — because Ronaldo is two years older.
The problem with comparing by date
Almost every year-by-year comparison ever published quietly compares a 30-year-old with a 28-year-old. When Ronaldo was having his peak Real Madrid seasons, Messi was two years further from his own. When Messi won the World Cup at 35, Ronaldo was 37 and past his peak. Line two careers up by calendar and you are not comparing the players — you are comparing where each happened to be standing on a given date.
The fair comparison is by age. What had each man scored by the end of the season in which he was 21? By 25? By 30? That strips out the two-year head start and asks the only question that isolates the players from the calendar.
What the data actually shows
We ran it across every age both men have reached. The result is more one-sided than the debate suggests.
At all 20 ages that Messi and Ronaldo have both reached, Messi's cumulative goal total is higher. Every single one.

Not once in two decades does the line cross. Messi went ahead at 18 and has never been caught at any comparable stage of a career.
So where does Ronaldo's lead come from?
Ages 38 and 39 — seasons Messi has not played yet.
That is the whole of it. Ronaldo's career total is higher because he has had more years in which to score, not because he was scoring faster at any equivalent point. By the end of age 37, our data has Messi on 738 and Ronaldo on 710.
The honest counter-argument
There is one, and it is stronger than most Messi supporters admit.
Playing at all at 38 and 39 — and scoring heavily while doing it — is an achievement, not an accounting quirk. Longevity is a real footballing quality. It reflects physical maintenance, professional discipline and the adaptability to succeed in four different leagues. Ronaldo did not simply outlast Messi by accident of birth date; he built a career designed to last, and it did.
So the accurate version is not "Messi is better because he was ahead at every age". It is this: at equivalent stages of their careers Messi scored more, and Ronaldo lasted longer. Which of those you rate more highly is a question about your values, not about the numbers.
